Absolutely necessary if you want to play DDR on your Xbox 360. The mat that comes bundled with the game is bad because it slips around, and you can't feel where the arrows are with your feet.
The Beat Pad and Beat Pad Pro are a thousand times better... foam puzzle pieces hook together to form a mat you slide inside and zip up, so it's comfy to jump around on (I am a 170 pound woman in her 30s who bought this to lose weight in a fun way, and it's comfortable for me to jump around on it). The arrows have square pieces of plastic under them, so you can feel the area where the arrow is with your feet.
The mat registers steps well (although I am on beginner and basic mode, so I can't speak for people playing the game at a high level). It's not even worth playing the game without this mat. I plan to buy a second one so I can play it with my husband or a friend.
Things to know: The only difference between Beat Pad and Beat Pad Pro (as far as I can tell) is that the Pro version hooks up with the headset to play online. I have the Pro version, but I probably didn't need it because I don't play online. That said, I don't know how the regular version would have been.
It is not wireless. Maybe they've made a wireless version since I bought it, and that would be nice because I have a tall TV, and I have to run the cord up on top where the Xbox is. It has a USB connector on the end and plugs into the front of the Xbox.
Once you put the foam inside it, it's not easy to take back out, and you should not roll up the outside covering for storage. I store mine leaning against the wall. If you had a tall sofa, you could store it underneath... it is large, bulky and not foldable.
