First off, I'll just say that I love Thrice. I have all of thier cd's and Ive seen them in concert many times. I just say that, so you will know that I am biased and you can disregard anything i say. I saw this album on amazon one day while browsing through different artists. I was so excited, so I bought this cd and the following one "The Alchemy Index, Vol. 3 & 4". I love the idea behind the cd set. Each disk has its own style. Fire is harder, Water is melodic, Air is mellow, and Earth is kinda folk-ish. I think it represents how the band has progressed through thier cd heritage. Fire= Illusion of Safety, Water= Artist in the Amulance, Air= Vhessiu, and Earth= the new direction. If you like the newer Thrice, then you will like all volumes of The Alchemy Index
I have read a lot of bad reviews about this album, and the 2nd set as well. First let me say that if you are not a musician, then you probably won't understand what happened to Thrice. As a musician, I pretty much stayed on the same track as Thrice. I started out with punk, metal, and hardcore music and gradually my tastes, skills, and song writing has grown into something MORE than the same old style of music that kids play. It is very evident that is what has happened with these guys. Just listen to Dustin's vocals off of their first albums and compare to even Vheissu...and it only got better with the last album. His vocals on the older albums were typical punk "monotone" vocals. Now he has control and knows how to use vibrato to his advantage.
To me, it's inspiring to see musicians like this succeeding in their careers, as well as growing and maturing as musicians, vocalists and song writers. You don't have to like the music, but don't down the guys for growing up. I give it 2 thumbs up.
Wow. Both of the Alchemy Index releases are absolutely perfect in my opinion. I don't know how to even describe what I am hearing to somebody who hasn't heard them before...hmm. They are definitely astray from the Artist album and more in the vein of Vheissu. The songs are so varied that I don't even think it is fair to compare it to anything they have done in the past. All I can say is that I think they have captured each of what these elements would sound like...if that makes any sense. It's really brilliant concept though. I really and hooked on both releases and listen to them every day at work. I am hooked. Both the lyrics and musicianship on these albums is top notch. It is hard for me to pick out a favorite track on this album. Firebreather and Burn The Fleet stand out but you really have to experience these disks from first song to last. I love how hypnotic the water section is. All and all you can't go wrong with this disk or the 2nd installation of the Alchemy Index. They both are incredible. It's been a while since I have bought an album that I can't stop listening to. I am already looking forward to a new album. You never know what to expect from these guys.
