Absolutely one of the best books I have ever read. At the end, it'll leave you speechless just like the first time you saw The Matrix.....

This book is definetly based on the geek shall inherit the earth concept. There are some really cool uses of technology that make you think. Many of them seem technically possible although completely impractical.

The book works its way up in technical achievements, so it is easy to believe that it should be believeable. As the book progresses, the feats become a lot more out there. You need to remember that this is sci-fi fantasy rather than think about how impossible it is.

I would give the book four stars, but the author seemed to go out of his way to may it rated R. There just wasn't any point to most of it.

Keep in mind that the book doesn't really end. There is no closure. Be prepared to get the seoncd book, which seems to be releasing late.

Silent, but deadly...very deadly.

Lurking in the shadows of our computer world is a rather unique program - operating like a commonplace daemon - that is not under the direct control of a human user. As it stealthily moves in the background, the goal is simple; create the technological climate to end society as we know it and bring about a new (corporate) world order.

Author Leinad Zeraus (Daniel Suarez) takes the reader on a technological odyssey of autonomous computer programs that assist around-the-clock in such vital areas as monitoring municipal power grids and enabling commerce to operate unabated, while depicting a clear and present danger when ego eliminates the demarcation zone between good and evil and blurring into a nightmare a scenario that may be all too real.

The destruction is set in motion by the online posting of the obituary for iconic computer game designer Matthew Sobol, which unleashes a series of programs that will enable his vision of the future to become reality, from beyond the grave. And there are many willing participants for this vicious game.

Trying to make sense out of the increasing shadows in the cyber-world are two professionals from different walks of life; Peter Sebeck - a detective investigating a pair of Internet-related homicides - and Jon Ross, who is trying to help his company battle a virus that is causing immeasurable chaos to its computer system. But it may be too late to halt the vicious gambit played by Sobol.

Daemon is slated for a hardcover release in January 2009 and Suarez/Zeraus has a sequel - Freedom - in the works for release for 2010. This chilling book sets the foundation to a wild ride into the chipping away of democratic values as the world becomes increasingly smaller...from the unobtrusive tap on a computer keyboard.
