Starting in the 1980's, Hip-Hop music began experimenting with rock music elements, and vice-versa: Kid Rock and the Red Hot Chili Peppers are just a few examples of this. "Rock vs. Rap" attempts to do some 'beat-mashing' by pairing up unlikely collaborators from the hip-hop and rock worlds, and seeing what happens.
Pros:
Public Enemy & Anthrax's "Bring the Noize" is a classic from the early 90's, which kept the momentum going from Run-DMC's rock/rap fusion efforts in the 1980's.
KRS-One remakes Queen's "We Will Rock You"- he keeps the hook intact, but raps his own new lyrics. His own "Ah Yeah" is reconceived as "The Devil's Crown", with new heavy-metal backing. It is perhaps the most furious song on the album. Defintely worthy.
Ratt's Stephen Pearce remakes his own "Round & Round" with KRS-One giving a guest rap at the bridge. This will definitely turn a few heads who might think this is the standard version.
Pitbull Daycare and KRS-One collaborate on the thrasher "Unclean".
Really, all of the songs that KRS-One participated in could have been released as singles- it would have also been nice to have some music videos from the songs.
Cons:
It's too bad that only a handful of marquee artists participated in this compilation. Cypress Hill's Sen Dog makes an appearance, as does Mellow Man Ace. Coming out on the indie Cleopatra Recordings, this was likely a low-budget effort. However, it would have been great to get people from 80's hard-rockers like Motley Crue, Guns N Roses, Warrant, and Cheap Trick together with rappers like Nas, DMX, Run DMC, Public Enemy, Ice Cube, and more..
