Rock and Roll Over

This album is probably my favorite KISS album of all time, if I had to choose one. I love everything about it, from the cover artwork to the triumphant return to their original heavy sound prior to DESTROYER. I love every song on this album, even the mellow "Hard Luck Woman" which was an obvious attempt by Paul Stanley to cash in on the popular sound of Rod Stewart as a follow-up to Peter Criss' "Beth." My only gripe here is the absence of an Ace Frehley songwriting contribution. 5 Stars!

Like most 70's Kiss records, this has stood the test of time. Rock and Roll Over has aged well alongside the 80's NWOBHM bands. If you weren't paying attention to the rock scene in '75, then this was a smack in the face. I'd say 90% of this album can be found on different Greatest Hits packages. If you want to start your collection with Kiss at their peak, get this now. Or, if you're fans like the rest of us, get KISS first and see where it all started.

After the more experimental previous album, the group opted to return to the style displayed on their first three releases. In 1976 the classic line-up of Paul Stanley (vocals/rhythm guitar), Ace Frehley (lead guitar), Gene Simmons (bass), and Peter Criss (drums) headed for the Record Plant to lay down the ten tracks included with producer Eddie Kramer. The resulting "Rock And Roll Over" LP happens to be one of their most consistent. Frehley plays a lot of fantastic solos on this record. Basically, it's filled with nine vintage hard rock cuts plus an acoustic ballad.

The first song "I Want You" is one of the best. It starts with a catchy acoustic arpeggiated intro plus the soft vocals of Stanley. Before long, a buzzsaw rhythm guitar passage appears leading into the main part of the song and it's a hybrid of blues rock and poppy hard rock. A killer solo from Frehley shows up in the middle. Another favorite of mine is the third number "Calling Dr. Love" sung by Simmons. Frehley's guitar has a thick distorted sound that I really liked and the lead of one of his best ever! "Mr. Speed" is also a highlight. It's a catchy straightforward hard rock song while "Making Love" combines their trademark sound with some acoustic guitar, plus a heavy metal riff for the verses. Simmons also contributed the standout song "See You In Your Dreams" which he later did a remake on his 1978 solo album. I really like the chord progressions on this one and the vocals are memorable too. Last but not least there's "Hard Luck Woman", a brilliant acoustic ballad sung by drummer Criss. It's one of my favorites that's often quite overlooked for some reason!

The rest of the songs follow their usual hard rock style and are great too. If hard rock is what you dig, then this album is a great addition to your collection for sure!
