A combination of Fiona Apple, Beth Orton and Norah Jones with a sound at the same time all her own. I put Arrica Rose a new and upcoming singer-songwriter into this category when I listen to her new album La La Lost. Saw them both at the Hotel Cafe and all I can say is wow!
Hi there, Rachael. I hope you read your own reviews occasionally. I just got back from a trip where I saw a guy I had a thing with years ago, and the thing is still there. I've had him listen to some of your music (esp. Track 14. does it have a name? where is it here? well, at least I've got it) and no way could it ever affect him as it has me, but, well, maybe I'm wrong.
When I read your bio I thought, yep, control freak hopeless romantic, that's me too, only without the beautiful voice and the musical ability. But you have put very eloquently and heart-wrenchingly into words every thought I've ever had after every relationship gone wrong, and I just want to say thanks.
And if you're someone out there who's just lost her (or his, I guess) true love and you're looking for the perfect cathartic song, I unconditionally guarantee that you'll find it on this album. Heck, you'll probably find several. Which, unfortunately, is why I keep returning to it again and again.
The really hard part about trying to describe what's so good about Rachael Yamagata's CD 'Happenstance' is that there just aren't enough words to say it all adequately. It's an eclectic mix of songs to start with, from soft and heartfelt to powerful and passionate, all tied together by Ms. Yamagata's amazingly versatile vocal talents. The lyrics are honest and real but also elegant and even poetic. The music runs the gamut of styles from rock to blues to jazz.
Here's a few words to try of for size: sensual, strong, strident, sad, soft-spoken, surprising, soulful, striking, sexy, surreal, sweet.
Try any of them on, they all fit. And that's just the S-words.
Whatever words I choose, however I try to say it, in the end all I'm really trying to say is this: 'Happenstance' is a fabulous collection of songs for a very talented musician. I simply love it.
