At this point in there career, after three excellent albums,Iron Maiden began to fully form there sound.
Melding a mixture of punk and progressive with the duel guitar ethic of Judas Priest,Maiden became the third band in Metal's Holy Trinity, following Black Sabbath and Priest.
The band had already progressed quite a bit with the arrival of vocalist Bruce Dickinson on previous milestone,1982's Number of the Beast, but now with Dickinson part of the writing team and a new drummer in the form of Nikko Macbrain,Maiden just got heavier.
Piece of Mind is the culmination of everything that had been great on Maiden's earlier records, working out the kinks to make this one of the ten greatest Metal albums ever.
To review this album proper,we'll review song by song:
Where Eagles Dare-Hell of a way to start the album.
This World War 2 spectacle is an homage to the 1969 action film that the band was a big fan of and is a showcase for the amazing drum skills of Nikko, who creates a machine gun strafe sound that fits the epic sounding chaos.
A classic.
Revelations-Bruce's first fully written song for the band, and a foretelling of things to come for there next record,Powerslave,is another epic with one of Dickinson's best vocal performances.
Flight of Icarus-One of Maiden's greatest songs, thsi tells the story made famous in mythology.
Terrific riff and another classic vocal performance by dickinson, with alot of emotion that ranks it among the greats.
Note:NOT a favorite of Maiden founder,Steve Harris.
Die With Your Boots On-Awesome,apocalyptic tale of the futility of violence and war is one of the most, underlooked and anthemic of Maiden songs.
A favorite of fans, yet almost always, dropped from the live set.
A terrific riff and chorus highlights this catchy headbang.
The Trooper-Murray and Smith's most recognizeable and iconic riff in one of the greatest metal anthems ever written.
Telling the story of a soldier going into the Charge of the Light Brigade, this masterpiece does the impossible of fitting an epic into just four minutes!
(If only they could do that nowadays....)
Still Life-Underrated metal song,is also the most atmospheric track on the album and one of the creepiest, with interesting sound effects and a bizarre vocal performance by Dickinson.
Made the top 500 greatest metal songs list by Martin Popoff, two years back.
Quest For Fire-Sort of a filler track with Maiden telling the story of cavemen from the (then) recent film,Quest For Fire.
Not bad,but more of the equivalent to this album's Gangland.
Sun and Steel-Good fistpumper, not mentioned too often with a good riff and a short enough length to not add lethargy.
To Tame A Land-Good Maiden track, that takes us down the road to war again with one of the band's better solos and good lyrics(where are the fans of this one?)
The production on this album is the most raw and metallic, the band would ever have(and Harris'bass is actually recorded properly!) combining with good writing and classic riffs to make for one of the great Metal albums of all time, and arguably this band's best all around work.
A must have in ANY Hard Rock and Metal library.
by all means ignore the clown who said "Kid Rock, Milli Vanilli, and Madonna have more talent than these losers". Wasn't Milli those guys that were caught lip synching? Hmmm...now there's a 'talent'. And Madonna? Please...that's girly music. Oh yeah, I think she needs one more dancer too!
Maiden is one of the all time great metal bands and this CD is a highlight.
Music for men...by men!! Just listen to the classic metal riffage going on in Where Eagles Dare. This CD belongs in any serious metal collection.
Anybody familiar with Maiden knows they have come up with some of metal's most classic riffs. Up The Irons baby!!!
