John Petrucci - Rock Discipline

Everyone knows(or should know) that there's no such thing as the perfect guitar DVD, but this comes closer than anything i've ever used. It's a little pricy but if you want to get better fast, get this. If you have to sell every other guitar book you have, do it! This will increase your speed and accuracy like you won't believe. I noticed improvement very quickly, although I still need to work on it. It's best to run through the whole DVD at once, not worrying increasing speed on anything, and then go back and increase the speed. Use the metronome, it will help you build a solid sense of time(which is very useful for recording). Get this and the Guitar Grimoire series of books. Check the spelling on that because i'm not sure about it. The Scales and Modes book will be the most important for lead guitarists. It's a little confusing at first, but once you learn the theory behind it you'll be fine. Good luck

Have had the DVD for quite a while now and the exercises help. The dvd/tab book cover a good variety of techniques (discussed at length in other reviews) and the demos start slow for a clear understanding of what's going on. There's a lot of material to practice and even those who don't particularly want to learn any theory should find most of it useful.

The reason I didn't rate this as a 5/5 is because I really would have liked to see more demonstration of exactly how to hold the pick and proper form to achieve speed. If you're not using proper technique (and I wasn't for the longest time) this dvd won't help much in my opinion.

Price wise I think it's a decent value considering what live lessons run now days per half hour. Summary: I think you get what you pay for; which IMO is a bunch of exercises to improve your speed and dexterity, not a lesson in how to better understand and play the guitar. If that's what you're looking for I doubt there's much out there that can top this.

I bought this for my husband for Christmas. He is a fan of Petrucci and is enjoying the book immensely.
