Maureen McGovern's newest, A long and Winding Road, is exactly what I would expect from this exceptional artist. I grew up in the seventies and actually found the music to be un-listenable. Now, along comes this CD and Ms. McGovern's vocals make them into glorious songs. Her clarity, diction, control, and range are there with the best of all-time female vocalists. One could not buy a better collection of 60's and 70's songs sung by one of the finest singers of our time. Obviously, I'm a fan.
Maureen has chosen the best possible tact to recognize these gems of the 60s and 70s. It would have been pointless and impossible to capture the original intense feelings of the original recordings by trying to record them as well orchstrated covers. This is the year 2008 and the most honnest way to salute these songs has been not to try and recreate them - rather to do it in a more detached manner - simple voice and minimal orchestra.
Maureen is still the DIVA when it comes to singing all these type of genres she has been doing for the past 30+ years :) I was lucky to have front row seats at a concert she did in Irving Texas that she did before releasing this CD and it was all the songs .. who ever thought Racoon Song was a misfit, she was just having some lyrical fun with it, I think when she recorded this CD it was from one of the shows if I am not mistaken. still she does no wrong, still great as ever and always will be :)
